Change Brings Transformation
Change often marks the most transformative periods in our lives. Whether it’s a new job, a relationship transition, recovery from trauma, or setbacks, or the decision to seek therapy, these changes challenge us to conform, evaluate, and evovle. According to the American Psychological Association (2020), resilience—our ability to bounce back from adversity—is a foundational aspect of mental health. Central to resilience is the willingness to embrace and learn from change.
Pros and Cons of Change
Pros:
Increased Self-Awareness – Change forces introspection, helping individuals understand their thoughts, behaviors, and emotional responses (Neff, 2011).
Improved Coping Skills – Through change, individuals can develop healthy mechanisms for dealing with stress, anxiety, and life transitions (APA, 2020).
Empowerment & Growth – Successfully navigating change builds confidence and reinforces the belief that growth is possible (Dweck, 2006).
Cons:
Emotional Discomfort – Change can bring about fear, anxiety, and grief, particularly when it involves loss or uncertainty (Hofmann et al., 2012).
New Routine – Established habits can cause a challenge to adjust to your new routine, and the loss of familiarity can feel uneasy.
Risk of Setbacks – Progress isn’t always linear, and adjusting to change can sometimes result in temporary regression.
